May 29, 2009 (5-7:30pm) The Wild Side: Wild Food Through the Seasons

There is a cornucopia of wild edible plants all around us - we just need to step back and open our eyes. Wild foods are tasty and wholesome and best of all they're free! Join herbalist Linda Conroy and forager John Holzwart for this journey through the seasons. Through an interactive visual presentation you will be offered an overview of wild edibles through the seasons, with tips for identification and preparation. May 31, 2009 (10am-1pm) Fermenting Herbs: Rose Hip Soda, Dandy Kraut and much more!

Learn to promote health through these time honored preservation practices. Fermented foods are made by a technique that relies on the breakdown of carbohydrates and proteins. When we combine herbs with fermented food we increase their nutrient density and thus their healing potential. During this program we will make and/or sample a wide spectrum of fermented food that includes herbs in their prepartion. May 31, 2009 (2pm-5:30pm) Home Cheese Making

Learn to make cheese in your own kitchen! This class will demonstrate the process of making some of the classic styles of cheese that we all enjoy!! Participants will make and/or sample several verities of cheese and will leave with recipes and the skills to begin making cheese at home. We will explore approaches to pressing and curing cheese in the home environment as well as learn to turn whey into traditional ricotta. Fee includes: instruction, samples, cheese to take home,recipes,a list of resources and a culture to get you started! Herbal Soap Making

Creating your own herbal soap is easy and fun! Spend time making soap that you can take home and enjoy. This hands-on class will allow you to explore the art of combining Soapanified oils and herbs to create your own special soap. This is soap making from scratch-just like your great grandma used to make with an herbal touch to give your soap that luxurious touch.

Herbal-Milk Based Soap Making

This class is for the experienced as well as the beginning soap maker. We will explore the art of creating luxurious soap that incorporates fresh goat milk (cow as well as whey will also be discussed). Milk based soap makes the creamiest soap around. It is considered a delicacy in the soap market. This class will offer essential tips to creating your own. We will also learn about a variety of whole herbs that can be included to create unique batches of soap. Participants will take home recipes as well as some of the soap we create in class.  Bring rubber gloves, 4 small yogurt containers with a lid and an old towel. All other supplies provided. Material fee $7

Pine Needle Basket Weaving

Learn to weave a simple pine needle basket. You will learn coiling and simple stitches as you weave a small basket to take home. You will leave with the skills to make a variety of baskets at home!! In the all day classes we will have the opportunity to incorporate other items into our baskets as well as make a lid.

Broom Making: A Functional Art

Discover the art of making handmade brooms! You will be guided through this beautiful and functional art.  Students will learn to make one round or one flat hearth broom (your choice), weaving and sowing the broom corn into place by hand. These brooms look beautiful hung on the wall, either by a hearth or other area of your house and are a function piece of art that you will treasure for years to come. Handles of various types of wood have been gathered and cured for you to use, and all materials are provided. Discussion about decorative options as well as  the history of broom making and broom corn (the grass used to make all natural brooms) will be included. Limit 12 people

Join us for a delicious night exploring the mysterious world of seaweed; an abundant and nutritious piece of our Northwest ecosystem! Linda Conroy, wild forager, cook, crafter, herbalist and cheesemaker of Moonwise Herbs will bring samples and discuss different types of seaweeds and share information about wild foraging, and how to incorporate these nutrient dense foods into your everyday eating! Whether you plan to forage your own or not you will learn the benefits of incorporating seaweed into your diet as well as an appreciation for their place in the ecosystem.
