Book Review
By Jane Wrigglesworth

This fantastic book by medical herbalists Isla Burgess and Mary Allan is the definitive home reference to women’s health and wellbeing using the world's oldest form of medicine.

It’s packed full of DIY herbal recipes, covering vinegars, teas, decoctions, tinctures, ointments, creams and poultices. It outlines the active constituents and therapeutic properties of each herb and goes into detail on how to process your own home treatments. It’s written in jargon-free text, with interesting anecdotes and recipes developed by Isla over her many years’ experience. This is Isla Burgess’ third book; her insightful writing and recipes continue to bring wise yet practical guidance to many, and Mary Allan’s photos, formatting and editing brings life to the pages.

I love this book. It deserves a space on the shelves of gardeners and budding plant medicine makers alike.

About the Authors
Isla Burgess

It is more than 40 years since I began my life long journey into the complex world of medicinal plants and an unopened packet of seeds stills thrills me with delight.
I also delight in creating situations where others can experience this world.
As a Herbal Medicine Practitioner for all those years my specific interest and focus has been on Women’s health. For the past decade or so it is the relationship between the Planet, Plants and People that consumes me. That includes developing a resilient garden of food and medicinal plants.
This lifelong focus has found me presenting at Conferences here and overseas, participating in documentaries: ‘Earth Whisperers Papatuanuku’ (New Zealand) and Numen (USA).
The survival of biodiversity on the planet and the loss of Medicinal Plant Species in the wild is one of my main concerns.

Books include ‘

Weeds Heal. A Working Herbal’.’

The Biophilic Garden Connecting People, Plants and Inscape’.'

Mary Allan
I have been dedicated to the study, profession and practice of Herbal Medicine now for over 20 years and currently work as a Herbal Medicine Practitioner in Auckland, New Zealand. I love to grow and gather both cultivated and wild medicinal plants for healing purposes. My commitment to herbal medicine led me to being the editor of Avena, professional journal of the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists (NZAMH), for 10 years.  My clinical approach draws on traditional knowledge, philosophy and providing a space that supports a holistic approach to healing. The majority of my clients are women, and I feel humbled to be involved in a project such as this which brings caring self knowledge to the plant women of the world.
